We work to protect wildlife in Ecuador

At Mateus Foundation, we seek to enhance the work of conservation and animal welfare through strategic alliances, professional counseling and training, and continuous support to wildlife rescue centers.

Management and Support for Wildlife Rescue Centers: We work hand in hand with rescue centers and nature reserves, providing logistical, technical, and professional support for animals in captivity. Our goal is to ensure their welfare and, whenever possible, support their rehabilitation and return to their natural habitat.

Specialized training: We provide ongoing and personalized training for rescue center staff, environmental authorities, and local communities. Our approach covers the proper handling of different species, support in illegal trafficking cases, specialized care for birds of prey, and other key topics related to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.

Counseling for conservation projects: We offer guidance during the planning and implementation of environmental conservation programs. By improving processes, strengthening administration, and supporting decision-making, we help each project create the greatest possible positive impact on wildlife.

Financial and strategic support: We help facilitate fundraising and improve administrative processes so wildlife centers can remain sustainable over time. By securing essential resources, we strengthen their long-term ability to continue their environmental protection efforts.

Why is wildlife conservation important?

We support wildlife rehabilitation, scientific research, and learning experiences for all ages. Understanding why wildlife conservation is important means recognizing that protecting wildlife in Ecuador also protects biodiversity, supports ecological balance, and helps secure the future of our communities. At Mateus Foundation, we bring together science, education, community, and nature because protecting wildlife means protecting our future.

Conservation in Action

Jardín Alado is a wildlife rehabilitation center for birds located near the Ilaló volcano. Managed by Mateus Foundation, it focuses on bird rehabilitation and the care of birds rescued from illegal trafficking, mistreatment, or improper captivity. As a space dedicated to wild bird rehabilitation, education, and conservation, Jardín Alado helps create a stronger connection between people and nature.

I come from London and I am 19 years old. In Jardín Alado, I really enjoy cleaning the turtle area and helping with the birds. They are sweet, we can feed them and take care of them. The work is hard but a lot of fun. Also, I have improved my Spanish a lot thanks to the team.

Jardín Alado is located 20 minutes from Quito and 7 minutes from Cumbayá, on Intervalles Avenue, Ruta Viva kilometer 9.

When is Jardín Alado open?

We are open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. We can also organize private educational visits or institutional events during the week. Please contact our team to coordinate the details.

What kind of birds are found at Jardín Alado?

At Jardín Alado, we care for a variety of native and exotic species that have been victims of illegal wildlife trafficking. Some birds, such as Australian cockatoos and parakeets, cannot be released even after rehabilitation because they are not part of the local ecosystem and could pose a risk to Ecuadorian biodiversity.

What is the rehabilitation process about?

Wildlife rehabilitation is the process of rescuing, treating, and caring for wild animals so they can recover and, whenever possible, return to their natural habitat. At Jardín Alado, this includes a special area for temporary guests recovering from injuries or other conditions. For the well-being of these animals, these spaces are not open to the public.

Every action counts to give a second chance to those who need to be heard.
